Coming up with content ideas can be challenging.
If you’re asked to write or make something, you might have a mind blank. Or loads of vague ideas that you can’t choose between. Or good ideas that you have no idea what to do with.
In any case, there are things that you can do to come up with better ideas for content.
Generating ideas in the first place
There’s no one way of coming up with ideas for content. That said, there are a number of techniques that you can look at. Here are a few to get you started – and if you have a good way to spur on your ideas, leave a comment.
Set yourself a target for how many ideas you come up with eg 20 ideas for articles on a theme for News Conference.
Sense of day and things you observe
Watch the news, pay attention to memes and other internet-type things, and simply look around outside.
Sense of day is about reflecting what’s happening in the world and your community right now. If it’s 45 degrees outside, you can guarantee that everyone in the city has noticed. You can then make content about weather trends, why it’s so hot, places with free air conditioning, fashion advice for looking and staying cool, ice block recipes… the list goes on.
Sometimes you observe something that would also make good story. It might be a funny incident that you see (eg watching a woman steal a pineapple from the juice bar), it might be a trend (eg the trains have been crowded lately) or something that makes you wonder (eg
Look at a different angle
So many ideas have been done before, and it can be tricky to find something that feels “new”. One way you can do that is to look at a different angle. This might be looking at a different audience, a local angle, or adding elements like an interview.
Remembering your ideas once you’ve had them
Sometimes a great idea will come to you on the train or in the shower. If you’re a bit organised, you can write it down asap.
The two most common ways of doing this are:
- Keeping a list in your phone. This can be using the in built notebook in your phone, or using an app like Evernote. Handy because you usually have your phone with you anyway.
- Having a notebook that you take with you everywhere. Great for stationery lovers and people who like not looking at a screen 100% of the time. Make sure you have a pen at all times too!
Choose your system and stick with it.
Use it every time you have an idea, even the smallest or vaguest of ideas.
The best way to get good at media is to make a lot of it. This is the single most important thing that you can do to improve at this media thing.
To keep it simple:
- Pick an idea.
- Pick a platform or medium. (Is it written? Audio? Video? Gif? etc)
- Make it.
- Ask for feedback.
Do this every week for a few months and I will guarantee your work will improve out of sight.
PS. Your teachers are always happy to give you feedback or advice 🙂
